Live from Cube Village

I wonder who came up with the theory that determined that cubicles were more efficient than offices.  Actually, what I work in really isn't a cubicle, so much as a stall (think horses).  I can see the person next to me and hear the people in front of and beside me, so it makes it very hard to concentrate on my work when I'm hearing someone's funny mother-in-law story or when someone else is having a discussion with a client, using words like "strategic alliance", "leverage", "branding" , "parameters", "multi-channel marketing" or "holistic".  It makes me want to fill out  BINGO card and start a game.  Winner buys Starbucks.  Conference call bingo -eavesdropper style.

In our office, headphones have become the universal symbol of "I AM BUSY", which in effect serves as a virtual door to our non-existent offices.  Its amazing how much gets accomplished with just a few hours of music to drown out the background noise, which includes but is not limited to, typing (over 10 people's worth), conference calling, disgruntled conversations about one or more of the following:  bosses, emails, clients, situations, salaries, bonuses, office equipment, websites, weather, temperature, spouses, friends, cars, pets, health, self, coworkers, etc.  Some days, its easy to be consumed by one or more of the above and before long, its 4:30pm and nothing on the long to-do list has been done.
