A few weeks ago, Nick and I had the privilege to host a celebration for one of my best - ok THE BESTEST friend that I have, Sheila and her husband, John. The party was in honor of the impending arrival of their "bump", who I affectionately call Lukifer - which is a combination of the boy name - Luke and girl name - Jennifer, that they have chosen for their bump. Note: LUKEifer - not Lucifer. Lucifer is Louis the yorkie-poo and shouldn't be confused with baby bumps. He's his own issue and a whole separate blog post.
I love to have parties and to have people over - especially for celebrations of this caliber and for people like Sheila, who is the one who is normally arranging celebrations, remembering birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions and who is always ready with a card or a nice note. She's one of those people. Also - did I mention that she can bake like a champ? Sugar cookies to die for, people. Take my word for it.
Anyway, my group of friends has stayed pretty consistent since college. In fact, most of us met freshman year as we all lived on the same floor of Scott House. We've added a few people since then, but overall, we're a tough group to crack. When you're in, you're in and we don't let go easily. Anyway - this group has seen each other through drunken binges, monster hangovers, campus housing, first jobs, first loves, marriages and children. The evolution has been happening for some time, although it never really hit me until we gathered for their party.
First and foremost, the party was at my house. Yes, house in the suburbs. Bedrooms and bathrooms and a 1/2 bath thrown in for good measure. Landscaping and lawncare services as well as perennials and a fence for our LAB MIX. Life comes atcha fast, right? Right.
Secondly, the party was for my best friend and partner in crime. This is the same girl who has drank beer with me out of a FRISBEE. Almost all of my stories from college and beyond start off with, "remember when Sheila and I..." or that one time "we". We've been on spring break together, lived together (on purpose!!!) and have more great stories than most friends deserve. Anyway - yes the party was for her, because she is going to be a MOM. Woah. Sheila's going to be a mom. She's going to be great at it - but I think I'm still having a hard time processing that the friend who I really bonded with because of an unfortunate incident involving VOMIT, is now going to be a mom. I can't wait - but its still wild to think about.

I just have to say, that I was there for that unfortunate vomit moment, and Linda, you can rest assured, that once Sheila's a mom, she'll get her "vomit" plus many other moments too!
i say get her a frisbee and a can of beer for her baby shower for old times sake :-) tell her she has to bring it to delivery room!
